It never sleeps. A smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire \u2013 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s plain and simple\u2026Smoke alarms save lives. But, they have to be installed the right way, and be working!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Types of Smoke Alarms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0two types of smoke alarms are:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Ionization<\/li>\n<li>Photoelectric<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You need both \u2013 because they detect differently \u2013 smoke, or flames, and you never know what type of fire might start.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The U.S. Fire Administration recommends every home have:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">a) Both Ionization AND Photoelectric smoke alarms, OR<br \/>\nb) Dual sensor smoke alarms, which contain both Ionization and Photoelectric smoke sensors<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Where to Install Smoke Alarms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Smoke alarms should be installed and maintained <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>both inside and outside<\/strong><\/span> of sleeping areas and on every level of your home. \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Be sure to follow the manufacturer\u2019s installation instructions carefully. If you\u2019re installing hardwired smoke alarms, have a qualified electrician do the installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><!--more-->Making Sure Your Smoke Alarms Are Working<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A smoke alarm can be powered three different ways:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Disposable 9-volt batteries<\/li>\n<li>A non-replaceable long-life lithium battery<\/li>\n<li>The alarm is hardwired into the home\u2019s electrical system<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 9-volt batteries that power smoke alarms should be replaced <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>at least<\/strong><\/span> once each year. You can time the replacements with seasonal or time changes. \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Long-life lithium will power the smoke alarm for about 8 to 10-years. Once the battery is dead, the entire smoke alarm unit, battery included, needs to be replaced. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Be sure to test your smoke alarm every month and replace the entire unit every 8-10 years. Simply press the hush button on the alarm and open a window or door. If your alarm doesn\u2019t have a hush button, wave a towel at the alarm to clear the air. Never remove the smoke alarm\u2019s battery, false alarm or otherwise.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Home Fire Sprinklers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Home fire sprinkler systems are low-maintenance and can reduce the intensity of a fire. Many times, they will extinguish the fire. For the best protection possible, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends having a combination of working smoke alarms and sprinklers in the home.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Escape Planning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If there\u2019s a fire in your home, time is critical and every second counts. It can take 30 seconds for a small flame to become a huge fire. In case of a fire, everyone in your home needs to know how they will get out. \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Prepare an escape plan and practice it with everyone in the home. It\u2019s really important to include children. Teach them not to hide in closets or from firefighters. Everyone should gather at an established meeting place outside of the home.
